Training and Fellowships

Dr Khattak is formally trained twice, in Pakistan and then in the United Kingdom. He practices General Orthopedic surgery & Trauma with Special interest in Hip & Knee Joint surgery. After Completion of Orthopedic Residency at The Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi & obtaining certification (FCPS Orth.) as independent Orthopedic Surgeon from College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan, Dr Khattak moved to United Kingdom & obtained Intercollegiate FRCS in Orthopedic surgery from The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK.

Dr Khattak continued his Orthopedic experience and obtained an official Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST) in Orthopedic Surgery from the General Medical Council, UK. He also gained intense experience of four Hip and Knee fellowships from centers of excellence across the United Kingdom (London, Reading, Bristol & Gloucester) covering a period of two and half years. During these fellowships, He worked alongside famous Hip & Knee Surgeons including Professor Fares Haddad, Johan Witt, Evert Smith, Anthony Ward, Antonio Andrade, John Makkinnon, Gavin Holt and many others.

Dr Khattak was subsequently appointed as Locum Consultant and then Substantive Consultant practicing Hip & Knee surgery, for a period of two and half years in NHS Scotland.

Dr Khattak moved back to Pakistan because of family commitments and joined Aga Khan University Hospitals in 2015. He currently holds the position of Associate Professor and Consultant in the Department of Orthopedics at the university. He now sees a large number of patients from all over the country referred to Aga Khan University for the management of their Hip and Knee Joint problems. In addition to General Orthopedics and Trauma, his area of practice covers: • Hip Arthroscopy • Primary Total Hip Replacement. • Complex Hip replacement & Hip replacement in Young Adults. • Reconstructive hip surgery after failed hip Operations & • Revision Hip replacement surgeries. • Knee Arthroscopy and Sporting Knee Injuries. • Partial Knee Replacement • Total Knee Replacement • Revision Knee Replacement for failed knee surgeries. • Reconstructive Knee Surgery after Knee Trauma.

Dr Khattak introduced Partial Knee Replacement Surgery, Ceramic on Ceramic Hip Replacement Surgery and Arthroscopic Surgery of the Hip for the first time in Pakistan at the Aga Khan University, Karachi.

Partial Knee Replacement is gaining world-wide popularity as an option for patients with Knee arthritis because of lower cost, fewer complications and superior functional outcomes.

Ceramic is a newer and unique bearing surface with specific indications for reconstructive Hip Surgery in Young Adults.

Hip arthroscopy has been an international focus in a select group of younger patients with hip pathology for prolonging the life of the native hip in this patient population.

Dr. Khattak specializes in Hip and Knee Joint surgery, with a particular focus on advanced procedures such as Hip Arthroscopy, Partial Knee Replacement, and Ceramic on Ceramic Hip Replacement. He is a pioneer in his field, having introduced these specific surgical techniques for the first time in Pakistan at the Aga Khan University. His expertise also extends to complex reconstructive surgeries, revision procedures for failed operations, and the management of sporting knee injuries.

Publications, Lectures & Teaching

Dr Khattak reflected his passion and focus in Hip & Knee Surgery in research and Teaching activities as well. Inspired by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) teaching Philosophy, He introduced Cadaveric Hip & Knee Arthroplasty Courses for the first time at Aga Khan University in Pakistan. He was subsequently invited as Director and faculty for these courses at National and International level.

Dr Khattak is amongst the pioneering faculty of The Knee Meeting organized for consecutive years in Karachi. This is a unique (First of its kind in Pakistan) meeting focussing on all aspects of Knee surgery, now held under the Umbrella of Pakistan Knee & Hip Society (PKHS). This meeting is recognized internationally and is accredited with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Orthopedic Basic Sciences is an integral part of the curriculum for FRCS Orth Examination. Using the Platform of Pakistan Hip Knee Society (PKHS), Dr Khattak is a key Faculty of Orthopedic Basic Sciences course in Pakistan.

Dr Khattak was Chief Organiser & Convener for First Partial Knee Meeting in Lahore, Pakistan. All his invited lectures, presentations, undergraduate and postgraduate education and patient education related activities are focused on the Hip & Knee Subspecialty area and so are his indexed publications.
